Golden Writers of the Golden Era of the 19th-20th Century

India, which I love to call by its native name — Bharat, is a land of diverse art, culture, and literature. India has had a wide range of writers famous for their writing styles from different eras, and they have all helped shape the golden destiny of Indian literature. So, let’s celebrate the legacy of a few of these accomplished Indian writers from the 19th-20th era and learn a bit about them.

Rabindranath Tagore

Rabindranath Tagore was the first Indian to win the Nobel prize in literature in 1913. No doubt the most celebrated novelist, poet, and dramatist of all time, he was born on 17th May 1861 in Kolkata and is referred to as the bard of Bengal. He reshaped Bengali literature and music. Some of his famous works are Gitanjali, Ghare Baire, Gora, Jana Mana Gana, Rabindra Sangeet, Amar Shonar Bangla, and many more.

Munshi Premchand

Dhanpat Raye Shrivastav, famously known as Munshi Premchand was a prominent Hindi writer of India. He was also known as ‘Nawab Rai’. Famous works of Munshi Premchand include Godaan, Bazaar-e-Husn, Karmabhoomi, Shatranj Ke Khiladi, Gaban, Mansarovar, and more.

Bankim Chandra Chattopadhyay

Bankim Chandra Chattopadhyay, known for composing Vande Matram, was born on 27 June 1838. He was a novelist, journalist, and poet. He was also known as Sahitya Samrat or ‘Emperor of Literature’ in Bengali. He wrote fourteen novels, some of which are Durgeshnandini, Kapalkundala, Ananda Math, Vishabriksha.

Maithili Sharan Gupt

Maithili Sharan Gupt was a renowned Hindi poet in India. He won the Padma Bhushan in 1954 for Bharat- Bharati and was given the title of Rashtra Kavi by Mahatma Gandhi. Major works of Maithil Sharan Gupt are Matrubhumi, Bharat-BharatiJayadrath, Manushyata, Panchavati, and Yashodhara.

Mahadevi Verma

Mahadevi Varma was a Hindi poet and novelist. She was referred to as Modern Meera. Some of her most notable works are Athith ke Chalachrit, Smriti ki Rehaye, Patha Ke athi, and Mera Parivar. She won the Padma Bhushan, Janpath Award, and Padma Vibhushan.

Ruskin Bond

Ruskin Bond, a famous Indian writer of British descent, wrote his first book named Room on the Roof when he was just 17. Some of his other famous works are Our Trees Still Grow in Dehra, A Flight of Pigeons, and The Blue Umbrella. He won John Llewellyn Rhys Prize, Sahitya Academy Award, Padma Shri, Padma Bhushan.

R.K. Narayan

R. K. Narayan, one of the most prominent Indian novelists to write in English. He was known for his short stories and light humor novels. His major works include The English, The Dark Room, Swami and Friends, The Guide, and Malgudi Tales. He won the Padma Bhushan, Padma Vibhushan, and Filmfare awards for his literary works.

Harivansh Rai Bachchan

Legendary poet Harivansh Rai Bachchan was born on 27 November 1907. He is best known for his poem Madhushala. His major works are Ekaant Sangeet, Aakul Antar, Satarangihini, Ek Geet, and Agneepath. He won the Padma Bhushan.

These Indian writers are the true gem of Indian literature and will continue ruling the hearts of readers across the world. The Readers Space expedition to introduce them to our audience so that they can appreciate the Indian Writers and poets who are the strongest pillars of our nation as they reflect the values and culture in their writing.
